Epoxy coating is not only aesthetically pleasing but it also creates a protective layer on the concrete. It saves water because you can clean it easily with a mop. The finish can be in several colors that suit your preference. A layer of between two and three millimeters can provide an impressive appearance.
Epoxy coating is ideal for a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces. Its use is not limited to floors but also works well for walls. A resin floor has a smooth and uniform surface without the presence of the classic joints associated with tiles. It also comes without the boards or strips visible as on the parquet floor. You can lay the coating directly on the existing floor or on the screed creating a single monolithic block.
Application steps
When it comes to how to apply epoxy floor coating, you should not underestimate the need for preparing the floor before applying the resin. You should thoroughly inspect the installation area for any cracks and contaminants that may affect the results of the project. Some of the elements that hamper the proper application of the resin include traces of cement material and moisture.
Preparation phase
You should ensure that the work area is free of dust and grease. Experts recommend performing acid cleaning, which eliminates most contaminants. Alternatively, you can clean the surface with water and detergent. Once the cleaning is complete, ensure that the concrete is dry and free of detergent residue. If necessary, use a steel brush for a more thorough cleaning. Delineate the application area using masking tape and a newspaper to protect walls, adjacent areas, and other features in the room. Remove these implements when the curing process reaches 100 percent.
You should eliminate any traces of cement mixture using a spatula to leave the surface flat and free of dust or sediments. On the other hand, repair the cracks using a diamond disc tool and fill in the crack with a specially designed catalyst. Mix two parts of resin with one part catalyst. Mix the substances for a period of five to eight minutes. Once the mixture is ready, apply directly on the crack either with a trowel or a thin brush before allowing it to dry for an hour. Apply a second layer, which should be left to dry and then sanded.
Scarify non-porous areas using a scarifying machine. The unit should have an attachment for dust extraction. Another point to consider before the application of the epoxy coating is the appropriate mixture. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the correct mixing process and measurements. Resin usually comes with a catalyst.
Applying the epoxy coating to the floor
Mix the epoxy and pour it on the surface. Spread it evenly on the work area using a plush roller, a squeegee, or a puller with calipers at the ends. The latter enables you to spread the resin according to the desired thickness. The thickness of the material depends on the type of application involved. For industrial use, aim for a thickness of 18 millimeters and two to six millimeters for light in offices and homes.
Curing
Once you complete laying the epoxy coating, pass a roll of polypropylene spikes to eliminate bubbles and other trapped gases. Perform this task before the floor cures. To avoid ruining the floor with the footsteps, wear polypropylene shoes with steel spikes either with a pointed or rounded finish. You can add is silica sand and allow the epoxy to cure for at least 48 hours.
Once the floor has cured, proceed to vacuum any materials that have not absorbed into the floor. Also, remove any attached implements used to protect areas where the application of the resin was unnecessary. For the best results, follow the product instructions indicated by the manufacturer. Apply a finishing coat to achieve a light polish and the floor is ready. If the floor is non-skidding, you do not need to apply this coat because it reduces the anti-skid.
